Facts about British Labs
The British Labrador has been bred for centuries to have a calm and relaxed temperament. Considered a “gentleman’s dog,” British Labradors are easy to train and, once trained, become an exceptional hunting companion. British Labradors are a highly intelligent breed of dog that analyzes situations, are calm, sweet, loving, and even-tempered dogs that are easy to train. The easy-going temperament and playfulness of the British Labrador makes it the perfect choice for a family dog, as well as a hunting companion. They are especially good with kids.
Females typically run 45-60 pounds and males run 50-75 pounds. The height at the withers for a male dog is 22 1⁄2 to 24 1⁄2 inches; for a female is 21 1⁄2 to 23 1⁄2 inches. British Labradors come in various colors: black, yellow, dark reddish-yellow (fox red), and chocolate. The British Labrador Retriever is a strongly built, medium-sized, short-coupled, dog possessing a sound athletic stance. The most distinguishing characteristics are its short, dense, weather resistant coat; an "otter" tail; a clean-cut head with broad back skull; powerful jaws; and its "kind," friendly eyes, expressing character, intelligence and good temperament.
Along with their calm nature comes a very strong drive to hunt and retrieve. British Labradors are mellow dogs that just hang out around the house, but put them in the hunting field and they turn into hunting machines. They're calm enough to hunt with handicapped hunters, yet have enough heart and drive to hunt for groups of 6-10 hunters. British Labs scenting ability is extraordinary. They are exceptional upland game bird dogs and strong swimmers, making them excellent waterfowl dogs.
